A Qualicum Beach Farmers’ Market volunteer has been awarded ‘Volunteer of the Year’ among those nominated from farmers’ markets across B.C.

Venesa Vallese was recognized at the annual BC Farmers’ Market Conference, hosted by BC Association of Farmers’ Markets in New Westminster, according to a news release.

The award recognizes the impact of a local volunteer who gives up their time to help at their local farmers’ market, whatever the weather.

Vallese has been volunteering with Qualicum Beach Farmers’ Market since June 26, 2021, and assists the market managers with sales, customer service and general enquiries.

During Vallese’s second time volunteering at the busy market, she sold more than $3,000 in market cash, on one of the busiest market days of the year, according to the release.

“It was clear right from the start that Venesa has always risen to any challenge and is willing to help in any way she can,” Qualicum Beach Farmers’ Market manager Launie Elves said. “She shows up at 7 a.m. to volunteer each week, in rain, sunshine, sleet, wind, hail, or snow. She’s even added a lot of cold weather gear to help stay warm on market day!”

Her parents, Lorri and Vito, also volunteer.

What sets Vallese apart are the incredible qualities that she brings to her volunteer work.

“Venesa is driven, generous, and funny and she injects humour into even the difficult or stressful situations. Venesa brings a different perspective to the market, which we really value and a wheelchair-user, she is a great advocate for people with disabilities,” said Elves.
