RDN renews agreement with Oceanside Community Volunteers

The Oceanside Community Safety Volunteers (OCSV) will continue to provide public safety programs and crime prevention information in the Parksville Qualicum Beach region.

The group works in partnership with the the Regional District of Nanaimo, ICBC, City of Parksville, the Town of Qualicum Beach and the Oceanside RCMP.

The RDN has provided funding of $67,220 to the OCSV every year since 2006. The agreement the RDN with OCSV expired in Dec. 31, 2023 but was recently renewed for another four years by the RDN board during its regular meeting on Feb. 27. The updated agreement will expire Dec. 31, 2029.

The OCSV works in collaboration with Oceanside RCMP, committing to create and maintain safe and crime-free community through programs and education.

The non-profit group’s programs include:

• Bicycle Registrations and Safety Programs (Project 529 Garage)

• Block Watch (RCMP Program with RDN, EMO, ESS and NEPP)

• Crime Watch Reports (Provided by RCMP, distributed via website, Facebook, Twitter)

• Community Barricade Duty (Parade routes)

• Community Cruiser (2004 Toyota Sienna for events and activities)

• Community Events (RCMP Staging areas, community outreach)

• Lock Out Auto Crime (ICBC program conducted by Foot Patrols)

• Child & Senior Free Identification kits. (RCMP Program)

• Child Car Seat Safety (Technicians by Child Passenger Safety Association of Canada)

• Keeping in Touch (Phone program for people living independently)

• Office Parksville City Hall (Public outreach)

• Office Qualicum Beach Town Hall (Public outreach)

• RCMP Safety Bear Mascot (Community events -Requires RCMP Volunteer with advanced security

• Safety Seminars (Fraud Awareness, Cannabis Talk, Elder Abuse, etc)

• Speed Watch (ICBC program with guidance by RCMP and Municipalities)

• Cell Watch (ICBC program conducted by Speed Watch)

• Stop Sign Watch (ICBC Program conducted by Speed Watch) • Scooter Rodeos (Electric assist wheelchairs)

• Working collaboratively with Oceanside RCMP members, RCMP E Division, volunteers and other associated professionals on public safety and crime prevention initiatives.
