The Regional District of Nanaimo is establishing a fire services advisory committee for its electoral areas.
A draft of the terms of reference was presented by facilitator Pam Shaw at the electoral area services committee meeting on March 18. The area directors and members of the fire departments under the RDN’s jurisdiction got the chance to review the draft and also gave their input.
The FSAC is being formed to report on matters related to fire dispatch, emergency and fire response, protection, and prevention. At present, the RDN has service contracts with incorporated societies for the delivery of fire protection services in certain areas of the regional district.

The discussion covered a range of issues including information sharing and collaboration with all emergency service providers operating within the regional district.
Updates from fire departments at all meetings, agenda content and distribution, meeting frequency, time and location, alternates attending for members and a consensus was reached on the terms of reference.
All the feedback collected that include amendments and recommendations will be compiled together and added to the draft. It will then be presented back to the fire services societys and fire chiefs for final comment before it will be presented to the executive committee of the RDN board.
