The Regional District of Nanaimo will review the location and costs for outdoor pickleball courts to be built in the Lighthouse Country in Electoral Area H (Bowser, Qualicum Bay, Deep Bay).

A year ago, the club Pickle Lites made a request to the Area H Public Open Spaces Advisory Committee (POSAC) for pickleball courts to be constructed near the Lighthouse Community Centre or at the Lions Community Park area.

The request, however, has been sidetracked since then.

At the Electoral Area Services Committee meeting on April 4, Area H direct Stuart McLean supported the POSAC motion to have RDN staff provide a report with information and costs associated with building pickleball courts in the area.

The report, once achieved, will be presented to the Area H POSAC for review and then presented to the EASC for consideration and recommendation to the RDN board.

Pickle Lites play mainly inside the hall at the Lighthouse Community Centre for close to six years now during the winter months. Their membership is growing and would like to have an outdoor court to accommodate them all.

There are pickleball courts at the Dunsmuir Community Park near Qualicum Bay but players say there are not enough to satisfy the growing demands.

Pickleball is a cross between table tennis, badminton and tennis.

The District 69 region has dedicated outdoor public pickleball courts at the Parksville Community Park, the Jack Bagley Community Park, Dunsmuir Community Park and also private courts at Pacific Shores Resort and Spa.

Indoor pickleball courts are also being set up during the summer at the Oceanside Place, the Qualicum Beach Curling Club, the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre and the Parksville Curling Club.
