PQB crime report: Hacked email costs business $15K

Oceanside RCMP also deal with vandalism, excavator battery thefts

Oceanside RCMP received 241 complaints the week of March 12 to March 18.

Some of the incidents included:

March 12

• A youth play village was reported vandalized in the 700 block of Primrose Street, Qualicum Beach. A window was noted damaged and some decorative lights were ripped down.

• A sum of money was found on Spider Lake Road, Qualicum Beach. Contact Oceanside RCMP during regular business hours to claim, quoting file number 2023-2378.

• Property trespassers were reported in the 100 block of Despard Avenue, Parksville.

March 13

• Two batteries were reported stolen from an excavator in the 100 block of Bagshaw Street, Parksville.

• A yellow and black 24” frame dual suspension BMX style bike was found in the 300 block of Alberni Highway, Parksville. Contact Oceanside RCMP during regular business hours to claim quoting file number 2023-2398.

• Gas was reported siphoned from a vehicle in the 1000 block of Resort Drive, Parksville.

March 14

• A youth play village was again reported vandalized in the 700 block of Primrose Street. Qualicum Beach. A door was noted damaged.

• A reported hacked email resulted in a local business losing $15,000 in a financial transaction.

• A resident reported a fence damaged by fire with discarded drug paraphernalia found in the 400 block of Pioneer Crescent, Parksville.

• A resident reported a scam responding to an email requesting payment for a service not ordered. The fraudster gained access to computer and transferred $12,000 within the resident’s own bank accounts but was unsuccessful in stealing any money.

• Property prowlers were reported in the 200 block of Bagshaw Street, Parksville.

• A property prowler was reported in the 300 block of Meadowview Street, Parksville.

• A vehicle fuel tank was reported drilled and fuel stolen in the 2400 block of Alberni Highway, Coombs.

March 15

• A laptop was reported stolen from a vehicle in the 100 block of Island Highway East, Parksville.

March 16

• A hatchet was reported used to vandalize a property in the 200 block of Mills Street, Parksville. A door was noted to have sustained an estimated $200 in damage.

March 17

• BC rear plate SF4570 was reported stolen from a vehicle in the 1200 block of Smithers Road, Parksville.

• A vehicle was reported vandalized in the 1200 block of Fair Road, Parksville. A door was forced open with a vehicle code reader and socket set noted missing.

• Two vehicles were reported to have sustained damage to door locks in the 1200 block of Fair Road, Parksville.

• A hockey bag with equipment was found in 100 block of Beachside Drive, Parksville. Contact Oceanside RCMP during regular business hours to claim quoting file number 2023-2553.

The detachment is located at 421 Pym Street North, Parksville, with public business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m., Monday to Friday, except holidays.
