The Town of Qualicum Beach has awarded the East Village Phase 2 Upgrades to Milestone Equipment Contracting Inc, in the amount of $1,831,624.20.

A total of five tenders were received and included a $50,000 contingency allowance, $10,000 in cash allowances and five per cent GST. The cash allowance is for potential costs associated with erosion and sediment control.

The work will perform upgrades and beautification similar to Berwick Road and continue to transform the area into a unique, energetic neighborhood.

The project will help foster and attract new economic activity in the town’s commercial area, as well as attract a residential base to support economic growth. This project is expected to be completed in 2023.

A development permit has been recently approved to construct a mixed-use development on Second Avenue, with ground floor commercial units and 72 dwelling units. The permit was the subject of a public hearing, and council motions specified that three of the rental units be designated as affordable housing where the rental rates are capped at 20 per cent below the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) rate. The permit will expire after two years.

“The completion of the East Village Phase 2 beautification will help realize the town’s vision of a dedicated pedestrian orientated destination in the heart of town”, says Bob Weir, director of engineering and capital projects. “This project will stimulate the area’s business and contribute significantly to the town’s tourism offerings.”
