The Town of Qualicum Beach is making some temporary improvements to the community’s skatepark while plans are being made to completely upgrade the facility.

The Qualicum Beach skatepark is currently in bad shape and users have been requesting the town upgrade it and make it safer.

Town council, at its regular meeting on Jan. 18, endorsed a number of motions that are geared towards creating a park-like atmosphere for families at the outdated recreational facility, at least, for this coming summer. Staff have been directed to improve the visibility around the skatepark by removing vegetation, removing the fencing around the skatepark, extending the hours of light and installing benches or picnic tables.

Prior to voting on the motions, Coun. Petronella Vander Valk asked if the recommendations are going to be permanent, as the plans to rebuild the skatepark have not been considered yet.

Mayor Teunis Westbroek indicated council intends to include the skate park improvements in the town’s 2022-2026 strategic plan discussions.

“We want to go in that direction but it’s going to take a while,” Westbroek explained. “So for this summer, at least, it makes it more like a family place. Typically the benches and tables are installed in such a way that they can be relocated.”
