The Regional District or Nanaimo wants insurance coverage for election workers.

A number of the workers on election day and also during advance voting days are not officially RDN employees and are not covered under its existing liability.

The RDN wants to make sure the workers have adequate coverage for any third party claims in relation to the work they’re involved with during the election.

Staff has recommended to the RDN board that they obtain associate coverage from the Municipal Insurance Association of British Columbia. The proposed coverage would extend through to the end of 2023 or 2024 to ensure any potential losses are covered after the end of 2022.

It will cost the RDN $250 annually for the additional insurance coverage on a temporary basis.

The RDN board at its regular meeting Sept. 27 approved the motion.
