Thanks to Bonnie Dawe for her letter to the PQB News (Beachfront development should be low-rise only, August 10).
Vancouver has lost out to developers, but a few places have won: Majorca in the Mediterranean has prevented high-rise development on its coasts for the last 10 years; Denmark prevented foreign developers by insisting that any developer should be Danish. Closer to home, the state of Oregon has kept its coastline clear of high-rises for the public. Still closer, Campbell River has prevented any high-rise development on its coast.
Can Parksville prevent a second high-rise on its beach? Two wrongs don’t make a right. Can Parksville defeat the developer and keep the ocean view? The view matters.
