Kwalikum Kondors senior boys high school basketball team continues to soar in the 2A Northern Vancouver Island League.

The Kondors remain unbeaten and lead the standings in the combined 1A/2A division, with three wins and no losses.

They opened the new year with a one-sided 106-29 win against Queen Margaret’s on Jan. 13. Logan Magel led the Kondors with a season-high 30 points, with Yianni Giakoumakis netting 24 points. Jin Kuwa had 12 points, Willem Whitehead 11, Owen Peters 10 and Aiden Campbell nine.

Head coach Taylor Wilson has been setting up games against tougher competition for the Kondors outside the 2A league that he feels they need in order to improve their game and prepare for the North Islands in February. They played against 4A school, G.P. Vanier of Courtenay, and are set to face 3A Carihi Secondary of Campbell River.

Meanwhile the Ballenas Whalers senior boys team have yet to get into the win column.

The Whalers dropped their third 3A North Island League game when they lost to the Wellington Wildcats of Nanaimo 89-51 on Jan. 11 on the road. Point guard Liam Manchester sparked the Whalers offence with 15 points, while Brett Carter netted 10 points.

The Whalers are back on the road when they take on Mark Isfeld Ice in Courtenay on Jan. 18.
