VIJHL: Oceanside Generals rediscover winning form with trio of triumphs

The Quality Foods Oceanside Generals are back on the winning track.

After their seven-game win streak was halted by the Port Alberni Bombers (a 5-3 loss on Feb. 2), the Generals came storming back to win three consecutive Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League games.

The Generals stopped the Lake Cowichan Kraken 4-1 on the road on Feb. 4, then avenged their loss to Port Alberni when they dumped the Bombers 3-1 at Oceanside Place on Feb. 5. They rounded out the weekend with an 8-2 win against the Kraken on Feb. 6.

Both regular Oceanside goalkeepers, Ashton Sadauskas and Aaron Kaner, were back in the lineup and helped the team secure the three victories.

Sadaukas was between the pipes against the Kraken on Feb. 4 and earned the win as he turned away 15 shots. Trey Boylan, Brett Arnet, Nolan Kehoe and Parker Klippenstein each scored a goal. The Generals outshot the Kraken 41-15.

On Feb. 5 against the Bombers, the score was tied 1-1 after the first with Miles Carson netting the lone goal for the Generals. It was scoreless in the second but in the third, Carter Johnson broke the deadlock with goal just past the midway mark. Kehoe sealed the game with a power play marker with less than a minute left to play.

Goalkeeper Kaner got the win as made 21 saves. The Generals outshot the Bombers 55-22.

Johnson set a new Generals record for the most goals, assists and points in the regular season.

He netted his 35th marker to push him up to third place in the VIJHL scoring list, and posted his 46th assist for total of 81 points.

In their second clash against the Kraken, Braedan Leary led the Generals, notching his first hat trick in the VIJHL.

Jacob Thomas had two goals and two assists with Brendan Carlson, Klippenstein, and Nolan Kehoe each contributing a goal.

Sadauskas got the win between the pipes.

This week the Generals play the the Nanaimo Buccaneers twice at the Nanaimo Ice Centre on Feb. 10 and Feb. 13.

They then take on the league-leading Campbell River Storm at the Rod Brind’Amour Arena on Feb. 11 and then host the Storm on Feb. 13 at Oceanside Place (7:30 p.m.).
